Water Conservation Tips

It hasn't rained in Lubbock for a while - so water is a valuable resources.  Of course I take using water wisely.   Because I virtually have a clean slate of a yard, my plans will include both xeriscaping and water conservation techniques.
Reduce the amount of grass.   I will plan areas for wildflowers, gazebos, and patios.

Mulch the beds.  I'll add 2" to 4" of mulch on all Flower beds.   This will protect the soil from both heat and wind.  In addition the mulch will help the soil retain moisture.  I'd like to try cotton seed hulls.  They must be plentiful here.   Anybody know where I can find some?  eMail me.

Water deeply and less often.  It worked in Denver sure it will work here too.  I found that if I watered deeply to soak the roots that I didn't have to water as frequently.  I bet here it is even more important to give the root a deep soaking.   The roots tend to grow longer helping them survive in the heat.

Plant Bermuda Grass.  Although I don't find it especially attractive, I will plant Bermuda Grass.  I have read that you only need to water (deeply) every 7-10 days.  Of course that will be after the grass is established.  Seeds & seedlings need to kept wet.   That will mean watering several times during the day.   I've also read that Buffalo Grass requires watering every 2 weeks.   I have seen any up close and personal.   It might be good for the outer parts of the property.

Add a sprinkler system.  The previous owners didn't install an underground sprinkler system.  So I have the privilege and expense of putting one in.  Guess I'll plan for a December installation - probably will be cheaper then (out of season).  I used drip systems in my Flower and veggie beds in Denver -- will do the same here.  I've read that it is better to have a sprinkler head that throws large droplet of water low to the ground.  This minimizes the water loss.

Water early.   As in Denver, I'll water early in the morning before the sun is hot and the winds begin to blow.

Test absorption rate.  The soil here is unlike anything I experienced in Denver.   Will have to experiment and watch the rate of absorption.
