This
bed was planted in the Spring of 2012 - bought crowns locally from Red Riding Hood
Nursery, Lowe's & Walmart. I purchased Martha Washington, Purple Passion, and
Jersey King crowns. I regret that I was not fastidious in keeping track of the
varieties and their planting location. At the time I was just concerned about
getting them in the ground. I let the plants mature
(produce "ferns") all summer and then cut back in November 2012. Hopefully they made
it through the winter, time will tell. NOTE: In late March 2012 I see a few spears
popping up. Fear most of the crowns died over winter. |
2013 Seeds Purchased |
March 2, 2013 - planted 10
bareroot Sequoia Strawberries purchased from Lowe's on the North side of the bed.
Sequoias are described as one of the best tasting berries ever. Produces lots of
huge, dark red, sweet fruit. Where safe from early frost it is the earliest Spring
crop and keeps bearing fruit weeks longer than the typical Spring crop. Works best
in California and southern states. Bears large, robustly flavored berries in
late spring and early summer. |

- Petite Orange Marigold (American Seed)
- Purple-Top White Globe Turnips (Burpee)
|

|
Harvesting Asparagus: Cut 6 – 8” shoots below soil
line. Stalks should be firm, with closed tips. Pick before maturity when pods
are almost full size before seeds begin to bulge.
Washing before putting in refridge helps retain moisture.
