2013 Seeds Purchased

Planted March 15, 2013
  • Bloomsdale Long Standing Spinach (Ferry-Morse)
  • Mary Washington Asparagus seeds (American Seed)
  • Italian Parsley (American Seed)
Planted March 16, 2013
  • Herriot Strawberry Plants (Wal-Mart)  $5.98 for 25
These plants were showing signs of some new green leaves - hopefully they will survive.  They are described a a mid-season berry that's a vigorous producer.   Large berries with shiny red color and very good flavor - with better disease tolerance.

Plant during the 2nd Week of April:
  • Henderson Bush Baby Lima Bean (Ferry-Morse)
Plant during the 1stWeek of August:
  • Henderson Bush Baby Lima Bean (Ferry-Morse)

Planted early March 2012: Planted Asparagus crowns purchased from Little Red Riding Hood Nursery, Lowe's & Walmart. Unfortunately, in my haste to plant, I didn't keep track of location within the bed.  Bought Martha Washington,  Purple Passion, and Jersey King crowns.

November 2012 - cut back flowering stems.  May be able to harvest a few stalk next year.

Asparagus Good Neighbors:  Basil, Carrots, Marigolds, Nasturtiums, Parsley, Petunias Tomatoes Bad Neighbors:
Onion, Garlic, Potatoes
Strawberries Bush Bean, Spinach, Borage, Lettuce (as a border), Onions Cabbage
  • Parsley & Asparagus increases the vitality of the each other
  • Petunias act as a trap crop
  • Tomatoes protect Asparagus against that awful asparagus beetle.  Tomatoes contain a substance called solanine, which protects against asparagus beetles.

  • Borage and strawberries help each other.  Scatter Borage in strawberry bed to enhance the fruits flavor and yield of the berries.
  • Onions planted with strawberries help the berries fight disease.
  • Bush Beans and Strawberries do well together.
